Today I would like to share with you the covers of the beautiful Vintage Russian Classics Series. This series consists of 6 Russian classics’ new editions, which were published in January 2017 by Vintage (for the 100th anniversary of the 1917 Russian Revolution).
These bold and beautiful covers were designed by Suzanne Dean, Creative Director at Vintage.
Suzanne Dean gave a super interesting interview to Waterstones to explain how she designed these covers. You can check out the full interview here but I’m gonna quote a bit from it below because I find Suzanne Dean’s creative process fascinating and her explanations have allowed me to see these covers in a new light.
“During the research process I became more and more interested in the mix of different patterns typically found in traditional Russian dress. […] The novels in the series are set in both post and pre-revolutionary Russia. My series design had to take this in to account.
Within this period there was a wide breadth of styles from the more traditional embroideries of flowers to the geometric designs of Soviet Russia by Stepanova and Popova.
I decided that Russian textiles would allow me to incorporate pattern into the design to evoke a sense of place and era without being narrative.”
What do you think of these covers, guys? Is there any Russian Classic’s editions that you particularly like?
